What kind of camera bag you use?

Postby sven on Mon Dec 01, 2008 8:49 pm

I thought it would be nice to investigate a little into what kind of camera bag everyone around here is using.
I myself am a backpack guy. It's not so quick to get the camera out, but without it, riding on a bike would be a mess.
I started out with a basic shoulder bag, but that quickly got too small, after that I got a slingbag, which is handy, but it's not possible to attach a tripod nicely to it. So I got a backpack.
Currently I use the the Vertex AW200 and the MiniTrekker, all from LowePro.

So what kind of bag do you use/prefer? Feel free to vote and leave a comment.

Cheers,

Sven

I also use the mini-trekker backpack. It's perfect for my 5' 4" height. That thing goes with me everywhere... and has proved itself to be able to get pretty wet while still staying dry inside.

Well, I have a bit of a bag fetish!!!

My main bag is a Stealth Reporter 650 http://products.lowepro.com/product/Stealth-Reporter-D650-AW,2049,20.htm Its great for bad conditions as it has a waterproof zipper on the lid for quick access.

My travel bag is the Slingshot 200 http://products.lowepro.com/product/SlingShot-200-AW,2035,4.htm Great camera access and a ready made table right in front of you for changing lens's

My Undercover "I dont want you to know I'm carrying thousands of dollars worth of camera gear" is a Crumpler 5 Million Dollar home https://www.crumplerbags.com/flash/flash.aspx#/english/product-details/5-million-dollar-home-md0504a.html

And then to top it all, I have a Lowepro CompuTrekker that I dont use so much since I got the Stealth Reporter http://products.lowepro.com/product/CompuTrekker-AW,1924,16.htm

I used to be a backpack fan. However, I dont like them too much as they dont easily afford quick access and they expose a lot of your gear to get one thing out. As I said in the Stealth Reporter section, this bag has a waterproof zipper on the top, if i need to get something from my bag, open the zip just enough to get what I want without having rain, sand, salt, snow etc in there.

I'm currently using a Canon shoulder bag, because my old S3IS's Lowepro 100 AW didn't take all the new equipment. I'm planning on getting a Lowepro sling bag or a backpack to accomodate my future purchases.

My particular photography style dictates a lot about what bags I have. I tend to be a photowalker, having my camera in hand while I explore a certain part of the city or attend a festival or other event. I don't like taking a lot of equipment or changing lenses, and in fact most times I only take one lens.

I have two bags right now. A smaller Tamrac Velocity that is just big enough for me to stick my camera in. It has pockets for me to stick things like batteries and cards in as well as my wallet, phone, lipstick. You know all the necessities for photography. :D I don't even see the Velocity I have on the Tamrac site anymore.

I then bought a Naneu Pro Military Ops Lima. I use this when I plan on taking more than one lens or I know I am going to want to carry around some water or other things in the bag. The Tamrac was too small to do that with. It has a ton of pockets and storage space and a very comfortable shoulder strap.

As for future bags, I want to replace the Tamrac with something a little more useable, but still with a small profile. And I'm hoping to travel more next year so I have to start researching how I want to fly with my camera.

Currently I'm using a bit of a custom operation. For a long time I commuted to work [and the architecture studio] by bike so I used a TImbuk2 Messenger bag to carry my computer, Zune, headphones, sketching paper and the like. I always had a separate (much smaller) bag for my film camera. With the digital and two extra lenses I decided I needed a way to carry those with me as well. SO instead of giving up my beloved Timbuk2 I bought a Crumpler Bucket. It fits my D200 with grip, Sigma 10-20, Nikkor 50mm/1.4 and 70-300mm lenses plus my 15 minute AA battery charger and the pack for that. Plus, the Timbuk2 has pockets for my Zune, sketchbook, pens and pencils, memory cards (in a neat little carrying case that attaches to the key lanyard) and my filters. In a pinch I can even fit my 15.4" laptop and a book to read on the train.

But what was even better was that when I was backpacking in Europe last year the Bucket slid VERY neatly into my Columbia pack with plenty of room to spare for clothes and such. This meant I only had one bag to take through security checkpoints, carry to and from hostels, train stations, museums, etc. All with the magic Crumpler Bucket.

It is getting a little cramped these days and the messenger bag style isn't the best for quickly getting to my lenses and other stuff so I'm thinking of getting a Lowepro Vertex (which will also fit the computer quite nicely) or a Kata 3 in 1 (for that quick-draw versatility).

Thanks for all the votes and comments. I currently use a Sling bag, which is where my vote went. It's now bursting at the seams and if I arrange everything perfectly I can just about get all the zips and clips shut... it's about time for a new bag; and I think I'll go with the majority vote and get a Backpack.

Our new poll is now up; What is your favourite subject?
